In October 2014, a man was rummaging through a dumpster near the Alvarez’s apartment complex. Jimmy and Annette were searching an recyclables with in Merced. That day they found the most valuable thing in the world, a baby….
The couple heard the man scream for help and rushed over.
Inside the dumpster, they discovered a newborn baby, wrapped in a towel. Surrounded by old food, flies, and gnats, Jimmy reached in and grabbed the baby girl.
“She was cold and she wasn’t really moving, but as soon as I was rubbing her and getting her warmed up, she gasped for air and cried,” Annette Alvarez said. “I said, ‘Oh my god.’ I think this newborn girl was going to die if we had not found her.”
Jimmy took off his shirt and wrapped the newborn in it. The baby, just hours old, was taken to a hospital and reportedly healthy. The 13-year-old mother was identified by police but her identity has been kept anonymous due to her age.
“You know, if you would have held her, you wouldn’t want to let her go. You’d be fighting for her, too,” Annette said. “I’ve been a foster parent before and kids just touch my heart, because they don’t ask to be here.”
Jimmy and Annette The Alvarezes, former foster parents who have 37 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, now plan to become parents again after filing papers to adopt the little girl they’ve named Milagro – Spanish for ‘miracle’.
